Poway is situated to the north of San Diego and to the south of Escondido. The region features rolling hills and canyons and has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool, wet winters. The name Poway is derived from the Kumeyaay language and means arrowhead or watering hole.

In 1954, the Poway Municipal Water District began using water from the Colorado River Aqueduct, which helped to establish the residential community we know today. The community has been designated as a Tree City for the past ten years, recognizing its dedication to environmental preservation.
