Bonsall is a beautiful area in San Diego County, which boasts a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. With its higher elevation and inland location, Bonsall lends itself to a larger variation of temperature. The area was originally called Mount Fairview before being named after a local minister, James A. Bonsall. This unincorporated area provides a beautiful area where multiple types of trees can flourish, particularly those with low to moderate water needs.

Trees can easily be added to your landscaping, providing a number of environmental benefits, such as cleaner air and reduced soil erosion, as well as the cooling effect of natural shade. The Bonsall area is one of the best for growing a wide range of trees and shrubs.

Some of the most common are evergreens, oaks, and eucalyptus. One of the most beautiful is the Baja Californian Birdbush, a member of the Heath family. Long, narrow evergreen leaves grace this tree, and its young bark, twigs, and branches are reddish, providing another spot of color. Whilst drought tolerant, it appreciates summer irrigation.

The Baja California Birdbush is very rare in the wild, with only one population in San Diego County. It is typically found in chaparral below 4,000 ft. Most of those growing in the wild are threatened by increased urbanization and border control activities.

Another tree with its roots deep in Northern California is the Northern Californian Walnut. It was spread throughout the state by the original inhabitants. This large fast-growing tree produces edible nuts and can be found in chaparrals and woodlands. While it has plenty of benefits in terms of producing shade and beautiful wood for woodworking, it is allelopathic, making it difficult to cultivate other plants nearby. Still, this tree will tolerate sandy and clay soils, plus it grows best in the full sun. As you can see, there are plenty of ways you can incorporate drought-tolerant trees into your landscaping.
