Tree Planting In Fall?
Contrary to popular belief, fall is a great time to plant new trees for a variety of reasons. Around mid-September North County San Diego will start shifting into cooler weather patterns, making it an ideal time frame for planting.
Why is fall the time to plant trees?
▸Root Establishment
For the most part in the Southern California the soil doesn’t freeze over, which allows your newly planted trees to properly establish its root system throughout the fall/winter. Once spring begins your trees will have a strong and healthy root system which will encourage its energy to be focused on top growth. In addition, trees with established root systems can handle the San Diego drought conditions much better.
▸Shade for the summer
When we think of shade, it’s usually because it’s already warming up for the summer. Although most people think trees should be planted in the spring, they will actually not be able to provide shade in the warmer months because of the shorter time between the seasons. Trees planted in the fall have more than enough time to grow a shade canopy before the summer heat arrives.
▸Lower water requirements
When trees are newly planted, they need extra water in order to establish their roots. However, because of the shorter days and the cooler weather in fall, newly planted trees will require less water than they would have if they had been planted in the spring.
