Arbor Day – Tree Barber's Sapling Giveaway
Helping the Next Generation Grow, One Tree at a Time
To celebrate Arbor Day, Tree Barber is giving away Coast Live Oak saplings to local students — encouraging families to plant something meaningful, lasting, and uniquely native to Southern California. Whether you're a tree enthusiast or just planting your first one, we’re here to help you grow something great.
🌿 Why Engelmann Oaks?
The Engelmann Oak (Quercus engelmannii) is a rare, slow-growing oak native to Southern California. It’s drought-tolerant once established, supports local wildlife, and can live for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, it's now considered threatened due to habitat loss. By planting one, you’re helping preserve a species that’s both ecologically valuable and uniquely ours.
🛠️ Oak Sapling Care Guide
Thanks for celebrating Arbor Day with Tree Barber Enterprises, Inc.!
With the right care, your sapling can grow into a strong, shade-giving tree for generations to come. Here’s how to give it a great start:
🌞 Where to Plant
- Sunlight: Choose a spot with full sun — at least 6–8 hours a day.
- Space: Plant at least 30-40 feet from buildings, fences, or other trees. Keep 30+ feet from overhead lines.
- Drainage: Avoid areas where water collects or soil stays soggy. Engelmann Oaks hate “wet feet.”
- No lawns: Do not plant in irrigated lawn areas — these oaks prefer dry conditions once established.
🌱 How to Plant
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the container but no deeper than the root ball.
- Do not bury the trunk — the top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface.
- Loosen circling roots gently and set the sapling upright.
- Backfill with the native soil only — no fertilizers or soil amendments.
- Water deeply and slowly after planting to eliminate air pockets.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base in a donut shape — keeping it 3–4 inches away from the trunk.
- Stake only if needed, and remove after one year.
💧 Watering Schedule
- First 2 weeks: Water every 2–3 days.
- First year: Water once a week (unless it rains).
- Long-term: These trees are drought-tolerant and should not be overwatered.
✂️ Pruning Tips
- Do not prune right away. Let your sapling get established before making any cuts.
- Major pruning should be done in winter (cold/dormant months) — never in summer when oaks are most vulnerable to pests and pathogens.
- Always prune for structure — not shape. Remove crossing branches or weak growth as it matures.
- We strongly recommend hiring an ISA Certified Arborist for any structural or large pruning — especially once your tree is established.
