Tree Pest & Insect Control
Insects and diseases are among the most common causes of tree decline in North County San Diego. When problems go unnoticed, trees can weaken, decline, or become hazardous over time. Early signs are often subtle, which is why regular inspection and proper care are important.
Hundreds of insect species can damage tree branches, trunks, roots, and foliage throughout North County San Diego. Many infestations develop gradually, and damage may not be noticed until tree health has already declined.
Destructive Tree Pests in San Diego
Several destructive insects affect trees throughout North County San Diego. Many infestations develop gradually, and damage may not be noticed until structural decline has already begun. Early diagnosis allows treatment options to be considered before irreversible damage occurs. For a comprehensive list of insects affecting landscape trees, see our Common Tree Insects guide.
Wood Boring Beetles
Wood-boring beetles attack the trunk and major limbs, where larvae feed beneath the bark and disrupt the tree’s vascular system. Infested trees may show canopy thinning, dieback, small exit holes, or bark staining. These pests most often affect trees that are stressed by drought, root disturbance, or environmental conditions.
Treatment options depend on the species, tree condition, and stage of infestation. In some cases, systemic trunk injections may be used to protect high-value trees.
Gold Spotted Oak Borer
The goldspotted oak borer is one of the most destructive invasive pests affecting oak trees in San Diego County. Larvae feed beneath the bark of coast live oak and black oak, disrupting water and nutrient transport. Symptoms may include canopy thinning, bark staining, D-shaped exit holes, and progressive branch dieback.
Early detection is critical. When identified early, systemic trunk-injection treatments may help protect uninfested or lightly infested trees. Severely infested trees may decline beyond recovery and require removal for safety.
Western Pine Bark Beetle
Western pine bark beetles attack stressed and drought-affected pine trees, including Monterey pine, Aleppo pine, and other common landscape pines throughout San Diego County. These beetles bore beneath the bark, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.
Early signs include fading green needles that turn yellow, then reddish brown, along with small pitch tubes or boring dust on the trunk. Once infestation is established, the tree usually cannot recover.
Heavily infested pines often decline rapidly and may require removal for safety. Proper pruning, irrigation, and overall tree health help reduce susceptibility to bark beetle attack.
Tree Disease Control
Bacterial and fungal diseases weaken trees throughout North County San Diego, reducing vigor, shortening lifespan, and increasing the risk of branch or structural failure. Early symptoms are often subtle, and problems may develop long before visible decline appears.
Our ISA Certified Arborists evaluate each tree to identify the cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment. Tree disease control in San Diego may include selective pruning, improving soil and growing conditions, or targeted treatments that help preserve tree health and protect surrounding landscapes.
Fatal Tree Diseases in North County San Diego
Some tree diseases cannot be cured once infection is advanced. Early diagnosis may allow limited treatment, but severely affected trees often require removal. Explore our complete San Diego tree disease guide for symptoms, causes, and management options.
Fusarium Wilt (Canary Island Date Palm)
Fusarium wilt is a fatal fungal disease that affects Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis), which are widely planted throughout San Diego County. The fungus spreads through the vascular system, blocking water transport and causing progressive decline.
Early symptoms often appear as one-sided yellowing or browning of older fronds, followed by canopy collapse over time. As the disease advances, the entire crown may die.
There is no cure for Fusarium wilt. Infected palms typically decline beyond recovery and must be removed to prevent hazards and reduce the risk of spread. Proper diagnosis is important, as symptoms may resemble drought stress or nutrient deficiency.
Sudden Oak Death
Sudden Oak Death is a disease caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, which affects certain oak species and related trees. It spreads through infected plant material and moisture, damaging the tree’s vascular system.
Symptoms may include bleeding cankers on the trunk, dieback in the canopy, and gradual decline. Leaves may turn brown while still attached, and sections of the crown may die back.
There is no cure once a tree is severely infected. Early evaluation helps determine whether monitoring, isolation, or removal is the safest course of action. Maintaining overall tree health reduces stress and improves resistance to disease.
Expert Diagnosis. Targeted Treatment. Long-Term Tree Health.
Tree Fertilization and Preventive Tree Health
Healthy trees resist insects and disease more effectively. Proper pruning, watering, and soil care strengthen natural defenses and reduce environmental stress. Preventive care lowers the risk that serious pest or disease problems develop over time.
Our ISA Certified Arborists evaluate soil conditions and recommend fertilization, mulching, or root care when needed to improve vitality and long-term stability.
